Are benthic nutrient fluxes from intertidal mudflats driven by surface sediment characteristics?

چکیده
A broad sampling program was carried out in the spring of 2019 on Brittany coast to assess how surface sediment characteristics drive benthic effluxes ammonium (NH 4 + ) and phosphate (PO from intertidal mudflats. total 200 samples were characterized by their porosity, grain-size, elemental composition pigment contents, as well fluxes NH PO determined core incubations. The results showed that (1) a high phaeopigment iron-bound phosphorus content (Fe-P) low porosity significantly related flux, (2) TN:Org-P ratio organic matter (SOM) flux. This indicated would be more driven redox status through desorption Fe-P under specific anoxic conditions during algal decomposition. recycling rates SOM mineralization sediment–water exchanges, enhancing diffusion overlying water. present study allowed highlight large variability nutrient at regional scale, result connections between microbial (SOM mineralization), chemical (adsorption–desorption) physical (diffusion) processes.

متن کاملMeasuring nutrient fluxes across the sediment-water interface using benthic chambers
This paper presents a simple model to determine the benthic fluxes of matter across the sediment-water Interface when a benth~c hamber is used. The model is based on accepting that the limiting step for the overall rate of transfer while the chamber is in position is the diffusion through the diffusive boundary layer (DBL) overlying the sediment, and it assumes that this rate is necessarily aff...
متن کاملCarbon and nitrogen cycling on intertidal mudflats of a temperate Australian estuary. I. Benthic metabolism
The light and dark inundated fluxes of O2 and total CO2 (TCO2), as well as the concentrations of chlorophyll a and phaeopigments, were measured (ex situ) on the upper and lower portions of 2 intertidal mudflats—1 in the upper Huon Estuary (salinity 4 to 32) and 1 in a marine side-arm of the estuary (salinity 17 to 34)—over 4 seasons. Dark-exposed fluxes of O2 and CO2 were also measured on the u...

Structures of benthic prokaryotic communities and their hydrolytic enzyme activities resuspended from samples of intertidal mudflats: An experimental approach
21 Resuspended sediment can increase plankton biomass and the growth of bacteria, thus 22 influence the coastal planktonic microbial food web. But little is known about resuspension 23 itself: is it a single massive change or a whole series of events and how does it affect the 24 quantity and quality of resuspended prokaryotic cells? We simulated the sequential erosion of 25 mud cores to better...
